Truly, it is a sad reflection of our faith when certain misguided Christians think it is okay to joke about the coronavirus pandemic. Yet sadly, as I have learned in recent days, that is exactly what some of them have been doing. Some of you will already know what I am talking about. But for those of you who don’t, let me tell you. Not too long ago, I came across a post on the timeline of one of my Facebook friends. This distasteful post was making a joke out of the coronavirus infection, and stated the following:

“Stuck in line at Walmart. I coughed and said, “This cough has gotten worse since I got back from China!” Boom! No line.”

—– End Quote —–

Friends, I could not believe my eyes. I could not believe that a God-fearing, Bible-believing Christian would post such a sick joke on their timeline. I could not believe that they could make fun of, and take so lightly, the suffering of others. Equally tragic was the fact that other people were liking the post and laughing about it as well.

Over the next few days, I encountered a few more posts where people were cracking jokes about the coronavirus. Finally, I had enough of it. So, I posted a personal response on my timeline where I registered my disapproval, and in fact rebuked those people — meaning other Christians — who were doing this reprehensible thing.

Well, on about March 8th, while scrolling through my Facebook news feed, I came across the very same “joke” again on another friend’s timeline. While this was a new version of the original post, the text in the image was exactly the same as what I shared with you above. As some of you may already know, God’s Word tells us the following:

“Open rebuke is better than secret love.”
Proverbs 27:5, KJV

“Them that sin rebuke before all, that others also may fear.”
1 Timothy 5:20, KJV

So, once again, as I had done with the original post a few days earlier, I began calling out the person who had made the post, as well as his friends who were liking the post and laughing about it, and even sharing it on their own timelines. In fact, as I write this current blog commentary, this disgusting “joke” has received thirty-four likes or laughs, and it has been shared four times from the aforementioned person’s timeline.

As should be clear to you by now, contrary to everyone else, I did NOT find the post funny. In fact, as I told those people in my rebuke, I found the “joke” to be totally inappropriate. I think it is being very insensitive to the suffering of others, and in my view, it most definitely does NOT convey a Christian attitude. The fact is that our standard of behavior is supposed to be based on God’s Word. As I asked those people, “Would Jesus or His First Century followers react in such a way to human suffering? Would they joke about it?”

Well, believe it or not, but once I began to express my opinion regarding the matter, some of the other folks in that comment thread began to try to justify their misguided behavior by making comments such as the following ones. These were made by four different people:

“Sometimes we just need a good laugh. No intention of hurting others. Some [people] can be too serious.”

“Bill do you have any posts about judging others?”

“Humor is the best way to assuage the fears of the unknown.”

“To each his own.”

—– End Quotes —–

I’m sorry, but in my view, there is simply no way to justify that kind of behavior coming from a Christian who is supposed to demonstrate compassion towards those who suffer, and not joke about it. As I told them, perhaps if some of them had members of their own families who were suffering from and dying from COVID-19, maybe they would not be so quick to joke about it. I also reminded them of what Jesus said in the Gospel of Matthew:

“But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment. For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned.”
Matthew 12:36-37, KJV

Well, the person who made the original post said that he was sorry that I was offended by his post. Even he did not seem to grasp the real issue that I had with the so-called “joke”. So, as I told him, I was not the least bit offended. Rather, I was APPALLED that some of my Christian brethren could be so insensitive to the Spirit, that they not only couldn’t see anything wrong with joking about a human tragedy which has already taken the lives of thousands of people, but that they even went so far as to try to justify their wayward behavior. That was the real issue for me.

As I shared the above thoughts with my friend, I was reminded of the following verses which were written by the Apostle Paul:

“Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils; Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron;”
1 Timothy 4:1-2, KJV

As I explain in a few of my articles, it is my belief that when Paul writes “having their conscience seared with a hot iron”, he is referring to the practice of cauterization. For those of you who may not be familiar with this practice, this is a process whereby a heated instrument or caustic substance is used to burn the flesh, in order to stop the bleeding, or to prevent a wound from becoming infected.

However, as a result of doing this, not only does the flesh become scarred, but quite often, that area of the flesh also becomes numb, because the nerve endings have been destroyed. In other words, people lose feeling in that area of their body. Thus we see that Paul appears to be saying that people become numb to — or past feeling — the conviction of God’s Spirit working in their lives; particularly when He is dealing with them regarding some personal weakness or sin.

Do you understand what I am saying here? If not, let me explain. I was trying to correct these brethren regarding their rather unchristian attitude, yet they could not even see that they were doing something wrong. They appeared to be numb to the conviction of God’s Spirit. They didn’t want to receive correction and were trying to blow it off. In fact, as I said earlier, they even tried to justify their actions by saying that I was simply being too serious, and that I shouldn’t be judging them.

Furthermore, when I went back to the same thread later, I discovered that the person who had posted the sick joke had deleted my previous response to him. When I questioned him about it, he responded by asking me if I had any posts regarding the topic of judging others. In other words, he was not asking me with sincerity. Rather, he was being sarcastic and indirectly saying “Bill, you shouldn’t be judging us.” In response, I shared the URL for the following article with him and encouraged him to read it, knowing full well how he would react:

Of course, I already knew where the conversation was headed. People like that are so predictable. So after waiting for a few minutes for him to respond to my last comment, and receiving no notification of a response from him, I went back to his timeline. Well, at least I tried to. I in fact discovered that he had blocked me. I wasn’t surprised. As Jesus said in the Gospel of John:

“If I had not come and spoken unto them, they had not had sin: but now they have no cloke for their sin.”
John 15:22, KJV

So friends, rather than receive what I had to say, that man — and his friends — rejected it. They didn’t want the truth. They didn’t want someone telling them that they were in the wrong for joking about the coronavirus. So, they had to silence me, by blocking me. How many times have we seen this happen when we try to share the truth with someone? I know that I am not alone in this. Some of you have experienced it as well. But it is truly sad when even our own Christian brethren harden their hearts against the truth and reject us. Imagine how Jesus must have felt:

“He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not.”
Isaiah 53:3, KJV

In conclusion, please do not joke about the coronavirus on the social networks. I do not believe that such behavior is pleasing to the Lord. Many thousands of people are suffering and dying from this pandemic, and it should not be taken lightly. It is no laughing matter.

Dear friends, I found the following information on a Facebook friend’s timeline. In fact, I think this person may have likewise copied it from the timeline of one of their own friends. According to my friend’s personal comment on their timeline, this information is attributed to an unnamed Swiss chemist. I know neither who they are, where they work, or what their professional credentials are. Personally, I learned a few things from this information. For example, I was totally unaware of the fact that viruses are NOT living organisms. Or more correctly stated, there is divided scientific/medical opinion regarding their nature. Some people view them as being in a somewhat gray area between living and nonliving. I was also previously not aware of the actual structure of a virus, or how and why certain agents can destroy them. Anyway, I found this information useful and interesting, to say the least.

DISCLAIMER: As I did in another post here on the BBB Blog, let me state that while the information below sounds solid, please understand that being as I am NOT a medical doctor or a health official of any kind, and therefore have no background in virology, I cannot guarantee that this information is completely accurate in every regard. As such, you accept it, believe it, and act upon it, at your own risk.

• a virus is not a living organism, but only a molecule of protein (DNA) covered by a protective layer of lipids (fats), that upon being absorbed by ocular, nasal and mouth mucosa cells changes the genetic code of the cells and converts them into aggressor and multiplier cells.

• Since the virus is not a living organism but rather a molecule of protein, it doesn’t die but rather disintegrates on its own. The length of time it takes to disintegrate depends on temperature, humidity and the type of material where is sits.

• The virus is very fragile, the only thing that protects it is a thin external layer of fat. That’s why any soap or detergent is the best remedy because suds break down grease/fats (that’s why you have to suds up for 20 seconds or more in order to make a lot of suds). Once the layer of fat is dissolved, the molecule of protein falls apart and disintegrates on its own.

• HEAT melts grease, that is why it is best to use water that is at least 25 degrees centigrade (you can do your math here or just use pretty warm water) to wash your hands, clothes, etc. Besides, hot water makes more suds and that is good.

• Alcohol or any mixture of alcohol at more than 65% will dissolve any grease/fats, especially the outer fat layer of the virus.

• Any mixture of 1 part clorox and 5 parts water dissolve directly the protein, which kills it from the inside.

• Oxidized water can be used besides soap, alcohol, and clorox because peroxide dissolves the protein of the virus, but you have to use it alone and it damages the skin.

• NO BACTERIACIDE WORKS. Since the virus is not a living organism, you can’t kill anything that is not alive with antibiotics, except to rapidly disintegrate its structure with everything mentioned above.

• NEVER shake clothes you have worn (or not worn) nor sheets or anything made of cloth. As long as it is stuck to a porous surface, it is inert and will disintegrate in 3 hours (cloth and porous surfaces) 4 hours (copper which is naturally antiseptic and wood because it pulls away all of the humidity and it stays stuck and disintegrates), 24 hours (cardboard), 42 hours (metal) and 72 hours (plastic). Don’t dust or use a duster as the molecules of the virus will float in the air for up to 3 hours and can lodge in the nose.

• The molecules of the virus are very stable in outdoor cold, air conditioning in houses and cars. It needs humidity to be stable and also darkness. Therefore, in environments that are dehumidified, dry, and with a lot of light will disintegrate it more rapidly.

• ULTRAVIOLET LIGHT on any object where it can land will disintegrate the protein of the virus. For example, it is perfect to disinfect and be able to reuse a mask. Careful as it also disintegrates the protein in the skin (collagen) and can cause big wrinkles and skin cancer.

• No virus can go through healthy skin.

• Vinegar does not work because it doesn’t dissolve the protective layer of grease.

• NO FIREWATER OR VODKA work. The strongest vodka is 40% alcohol and you need at least 65%.

• LISTERINE DOES WORK! It is 65% alcohol.

• The more confined space the virus is in, the more concentrated it becomes. Open air and natural ventilation are the best.

• It is imperative to wash your hands before and after touching mucous areas, food, knobs, light switches, remote controls, cell phones, watches, computers, desks, TVs etc. And when after using the toilet.

• You need to use lotion on your dry hands, because the molecules can hide in tiny cracks. The thicker the cream, the better. Also keep your fingernails short! so the virus can’t hide in there either.

Recently, on one of my Facebook friend’s timeline, a discussion arose because a certain newscaster had apparently used the phrase “the new normal” while discussing the current strain of the coronavirus. That is, COVID-19, a sometimes deadly disease which is caused by the SARS-CoV-2 strain. My friend wanted to know what the reporter meant by using that phrase. A number of her friends responded to her inquiry. However, in my view, some of them were not helpful, because they immediately discounted the reporter, told people not to listen to him, and accused the reporter of being part of some Leftist conspiracy. In other words, it was a typical tinfoil hat response by a few of her friends.

As I have mentioned before, if there is one thing that irks me, it is when people shoot off their mouths, and voice their opinions, when they obviously don’t know what they are talking about. They can be quite overbearing and abrasive in the way they choose to communicate. At any rate, that is exactly how rumors, disinformation and conspiracy theories propagate, sad to say, and they are often born of ignorance to the facts. To continue, following is a slightly edited version of how I responded to my Facebook friend:

For what it’s worth, and without mentioning specific names, I think a few of your friends here are distorting the facts and bending things out of shape due to their own particular biases.

While I obviously don’t get the same news broadcasts as you do, I can tell you for a fact that your local newscaster is by no means the first person to use the phrase “the new normal”, or use it in that context with that intended meaning. So, in my view, to try to turn it into some kind of Leftist conspiracy is a bit ridiculous.

The fact of the matter is that what that newscaster was expressing by using the phrase “the new normal”, is something which has been of great concern to, as well as has been expected by, scientists and medical and health professionals for literally decades now. In fact, I wrote about it quite extensively back in 1999 in my in-depth 14-part series entitled “Fulfilled Prophecy: The Beginning of Sorrows.” More specifically, from near the end of part 8 through the beginning of part 10, I discuss modern plagues, pestilences, super-strains and drug-resistant superbugs. I will include a link to the series at the end of this same commentary.

As I was just discussing with another friend yesterday, viruses, bacteria and other pathogens are constantly mutating, just like the current COVID-19 is doing. It seems that the more drugs and antibiotics we throw at them in order to defeat them, the more they mutate and adapt in order to resist whatever we throw at them. They are survivors. They become superbugs, or super-strains, which are very difficult to defeat, thus forcing us to create even newer drugs, and thus the vicious cycle continues.

That is basically what we now have in COVID-19. In a word, it is the new kid on the block, and it is very tough, very virulent and very mean. We currently know and understand so little about it. That is precisely why it is called “novel coronavirus”. That is, because it is a new strain which has never been seen before. As a result, it takes health officials some time to understand the new strain, to grasp its behavior, to know its weaknesses, to comprehend how it propagates, etc. That is also why it will require at least 12 to 18 months to develop and properly test, and then market, an effective, safe vaccine against it. Very early tests have already begun.

Now, what compounds this problem even further is the fact that there are a few billion more people in the world today than there were a few decades ago when scientists first began to become concerned about this issue. Not only are there more people in the world, but there are also a lot more people living together in crowded cities, where living and health standards are not always the best. In short, such places are powder kegs, and the perfect environment, just waiting for the next epidemic or pandemic to occur when a new and unknown strain of virus rises on the scene.

This appears to be exactly what happened in the city of Wuhan, which is the capital of Hubei Province in China. After infecting some 80,000 people there, beginning in Wuhan, COVID-19 rapidly spread all around the world in a matter of less than three months, so that there are now many thousands of more cases outside of China, than inside China. Very few places have remained immune to this subtle pathogen which has sneaked into countries unawares.

So indeed, in this crowded world which grows even more crowded with each passing year, where city environments offer the perfect breeding ground for these beasties, and where new strains are constantly mutating, adapting and becoming more drug-resistant, this may indeed be the new normal. COVID-19 most certainly won’t be the last of these invaders. There will be more to come in the future. As such, we should prepare for them, and we should get used to it.

In closing, let me add that while we should and need to discuss these important issues, and while they may possibly frighten and alarm some people, at the same time, as I have mentioned in a number of my other recent coronavirus-related articles and BBB Blog commentaries, as Bible-believing Christians, we should NOT allow ourselves to be overcome by worry and fear. We must continue to trust in the Lord, claim His peace in our lives, pray for His protection, and make certain that we are living lives which are pleasing in His sight.

For those of you who may be interested, following is my current position regarding the COVID-19 pandemic, and how I believe we should respond to it as Christians:

It goes without saying that you should trust God for your protection and not fear or worry, despite how much you may be tempted to do so. Considering how much fear-mongering is going on right now — particularly all across the Internet — isolating yourself from that fear may be a little difficult at times. However, by God’s Grace, you will make it through the current trial. One thing which will obviously help you is to dwell in God’s Word. Read it daily, as your time permits. Many of my readers will be familiar with verses such as the following ones. You will find similar verses in the “Fear and Peace” KJV Bible Verse List which is listed at the end of this commentary:

“Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee.”
Isaiah 26:3, KJV

“There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.”
1 Corinthians 10:13, KJV

“For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.”
2 Timothy 1:7, KJV

While we most definitely need to trust in the Lord for our well-being and protection, yet at the same time, we also need to be practical, and we need to use a little common sense and exercise wisdom as well. For example, make sure that you are following the government’s guidelines regarding social distancing and other recommended safety practices which have often been repeated in your country’s announcements and press releases.

Aside from washing your hands for twenty seconds with a good hand soap frequently, among other recommended practices, this also means making sure that you wear a high quality respirator — or face mask — such as an N95 or an FFP3, if you must go outside for some reason and venture into your town or city. This is particularly true if you are sick, elderly or have any other underlying medical condition(s) which makes you more vulnerable to the coronavirus, or COVID-19. Please note that I said only if you must go out. Don’t venture out for something frivolous which can wait until later.

Whatever you do, please don’t tempt the Lord as some foolish Christians appear to be doing at this present time. I can’t believe some of the defiant attitudes which some of them are displaying right now. Some of these people are even refusing to wear face masks, and have publicly stated that they will defy any curfews or lockdowns which are imposed in their area. Even the Scriptures inform us that we should prepare ourselves and protect ourselves when we are aware of a coming calamity. Consider the following verse:

“A prudent man foreseeth the evil, and hideth himself: but the simple pass on, and are punished.”
Proverbs 22:3, KJV

Do you see that? If you are so foolish that you refuse to prepare, then you have no one to blame but yourself if you suffer when the calamity strikes. Please remember that while God indeed protected the Israelites during the plague of death in the land of Egypt, they were still required to do THEIR part as well by placing the lamb’s blood on their door posts and lintels, and then remaining inside their homes until the Angel of Death had passed. So, you see, they had to have faith and trust that God would spare them that night, but they also had to make physical preparations as well.

As many Christians already know, we are supposed to obey the higher powers — or government authorities — as long as they don’t contradict God’s Word. After all, the Scriptures plainly inform us that it is God who places them in that position of authority for whatever His reasons and purposes. So please don’t defy whatever pandemic-related guidelines have been put into place in your area by the authorities. As the Apostle Peter wrote in his first Epistle:

“Submit yourselves to every ordinance of man for the Lord’s sake: whether it be to the king, as supreme; Or unto governors, as unto them that are sent by him for the punishment of evildoers, and for the praise of them that do well. For so is the will of God, that with well doing ye may put to silence the ignorance of foolish men: As free, and not using your liberty for a cloke of maliciousness, but as the servants of God. Honour all men. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honour the king.”
1 Peter 2:13-17, KJV

So remember; the pandemic guidelines they put in place are meant to protect you, and the ones you love. So don’t be selfish or foolish! Follow the guidelines, remain inside when ordered to do so, and wear a face mask when necessary. The truth of the matter is that getting someone else sick because of your negligence or defiance in following the guidelines is NOT demonstrating Christian love, is it? Exactly.
