Coronavirus: How to Respond to the Pandemic

For those of you who may be interested, following is my current position regarding the COVID-19 pandemic, and how I believe we should respond to it as Christians:

It goes without saying that you should trust God for your protection and not fear or worry, despite how much you may be tempted to do so. Considering how much fear-mongering is going on right now — particularly all across the Internet — isolating yourself from that fear may be a little difficult at times. However, by God’s Grace, you will make it through the current trial. One thing which will obviously help you is to dwell in God’s Word. Read it daily, as your time permits. Many of my readers will be familiar with verses such as the following ones. You will find similar verses in the “Fear and Peace” KJV Bible Verse List which is listed at the end of this commentary:

“Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee.”
Isaiah 26:3, KJV

“There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.”
1 Corinthians 10:13, KJV

“For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.”
2 Timothy 1:7, KJV

While we most definitely need to trust in the Lord for our well-being and protection, yet at the same time, we also need to be practical, and we need to use a little common sense and exercise wisdom as well. For example, make sure that you are following the government’s guidelines regarding social distancing and other recommended safety practices which have often been repeated in your country’s announcements and press releases.

Aside from washing your hands for twenty seconds with a good hand soap frequently, among other recommended practices, this also means making sure that you wear a high quality respirator — or face mask — such as an N95 or an FFP3, if you must go outside for some reason and venture into your town or city. This is particularly true if you are sick, elderly or have any other underlying medical condition(s) which makes you more vulnerable to the coronavirus, or COVID-19. Please note that I said only if you must go out. Don’t venture out for something frivolous which can wait until later.

Whatever you do, please don’t tempt the Lord as some foolish Christians appear to be doing at this present time. I can’t believe some of the defiant attitudes which some of them are displaying right now. Some of these people are even refusing to wear face masks, and have publicly stated that they will defy any curfews or lockdowns which are imposed in their area. Even the Scriptures inform us that we should prepare ourselves and protect ourselves when we are aware of a coming calamity. Consider the following verse:

“A prudent man foreseeth the evil, and hideth himself: but the simple pass on, and are punished.”
Proverbs 22:3, KJV

Do you see that? If you are so foolish that you refuse to prepare, then you have no one to blame but yourself if you suffer when the calamity strikes. Please remember that while God indeed protected the Israelites during the plague of death in the land of Egypt, they were still required to do THEIR part as well by placing the lamb’s blood on their door posts and lintels, and then remaining inside their homes until the Angel of Death had passed. So, you see, they had to have faith and trust that God would spare them that night, but they also had to make physical preparations as well.

As many Christians already know, we are supposed to obey the higher powers — or government authorities — as long as they don’t contradict God’s Word. After all, the Scriptures plainly inform us that it is God who places them in that position of authority for whatever His reasons and purposes. So please don’t defy whatever pandemic-related guidelines have been put into place in your area by the authorities. As the Apostle Peter wrote in his first Epistle:

“Submit yourselves to every ordinance of man for the Lord’s sake: whether it be to the king, as supreme; Or unto governors, as unto them that are sent by him for the punishment of evildoers, and for the praise of them that do well. For so is the will of God, that with well doing ye may put to silence the ignorance of foolish men: As free, and not using your liberty for a cloke of maliciousness, but as the servants of God. Honour all men. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honour the king.”
1 Peter 2:13-17, KJV

So remember; the pandemic guidelines they put in place are meant to protect you, and the ones you love. So don’t be selfish or foolish! Follow the guidelines, remain inside when ordered to do so, and wear a face mask when necessary. The truth of the matter is that getting someone else sick because of your negligence or defiance in following the guidelines is NOT demonstrating Christian love, is it? Exactly.
